CHICAGO (WLS) — Six students from a private Christian school in Hammond were injured when their school bus overturned on the Dan Ryan Expressway Tuesday afternoon.

Illinois State Police said they were called at about 2:30 p.m. to north of I-94 on 35th Street to a report of a rollover involving a school bus. Only the school bus was involved in the crash, state police said.

The bus was marked with Town Baptist School, a Christian school based in Hammond. School officials told ABC7 there were six students on the bus when the accident happened, and all six were taken to hospital. School officials said no one was seriously injured.

Chicago fire officials said the children aged between 12 and 16 were taken to Comer Children's Hospital and University of Chicago Medical Center. The bus driver refused treatment at the scene.

The force of the impact tore the windshield off the front of the bus, shattering a window.

The two lanes of the motorway were closed for an hour before the evening commute afterward.

What caused the crash was not immediately known other than state police saying no other vehicles were involved. The bus was driving on a busy highway in the rain at the time.

An investigation by the Illinois State Police is ongoing.
