Nomadic Matt looks out over Madagascar's arid landscape

I'm bad at taking photos. Not that the photos I take are bad (although there is debate too!). On the other hand, I always forget to take photos for this blog whenever I travel.

I've gotten better in the last few years (thanks to the team here for constantly reminding me). But that means I take lots of photos — mine for my social media, pictures of landscapes and monuments for websites, menus so I can update prices on the blog, and everything in between.

After more than 15 years of traveling the world, I have thousands of pictures on my hard drive.

Literally.

I thoroughly go through all my photos in 2022. It took TWO MONTHS to sort and organize them into folders, separate them by date and purpose, and remove duplicates and ones I don't want to keep.

That's troublesome. But it doesn't have to be.

Enter Mylio's photo.

Mylio is an app that makes it easy to store, store, edit, organize, and protect all your travel photos — as well as important documents, like passport scans and visa applications. It's pretty new and I wish I found it sooner as it would have saved me a lot of time. But, hopefully, it can do it for you!

Mylio is designed to simplify your life as a traveler, so you don't have to waste time uploading pictures and transferring them from device to device.

If you're like me and have a lot of photos — photos you want to keep safe and organized — here's how Mylio can help ensure you don't lose those trip memories.

What is Mylio?

Miles is an app that turns your computer, phone, tablet and/or storage device into a convenient and reliable system for managing lifelong memories.

With it, all your photos and videos — from any source — are cataloged into one library that can be accessed across all your devices.

Did you take photos in Paris on your iPhone, but videos on your tablet? With Mylio, they'll sync automatically to your laptop, so you don't have to transfer them. Every photo is available on every device. All the time.

Most travelers (myself included, until recently) have no system in place to manage their photos or keep them safe from device failure, theft, or loss. We only share some on social media and dump the rest on the hard drive or in the cloud.

As a result, many travelers struggle to find a particular image, having to scour through multiple folders to find the image they need. I can't count the number of times I've rummaged through folders to find photos, only to find them empty-handed.

While dumping images on the cloud is simple, it's not the best solution. The disadvantages are worth considering:

  • Cloud storage requires you to pay more when you add more photos. Some cloud plans have limited storage.
  • Some solutions have great features on desktop (Adobe Lightroom), but are limited on mobile devices.
  • Some solutions don't allow syncing between MacOS, iOS, Android, or Windows platforms.

Mylio allows travelers to circumvent all these restrictions. It's the easiest way to organize, protect, and store your travel photos and videos.

Why Use Mylio?

With Miles, travelers turn their smartphones, computers, and storage devices into secure, connected libraries of photos, videos, and other important documents. Travelers can easily sync their Android, iOS, Windows and MacOS devices; add cloud storage; and even back up media from Facebook and Instagram.

In short, here's what Mylio can do for you:

  • Gather: It brings together all the photos and videos in a beautiful library, including those taken before the “iPhone era”.
  • Choose: It cleans your library, removes duplicates in seconds, tags people, and adds events and places. Save only the photos you need and want to keep.
  • Protect: It automatically backs up everything to your device. And if you want to add cloud storage (like Google Drive), Mylio will encrypt everything so the data stays with you and nothing is shared with “Big Brother”.
  • Access: No matter what device you use, updates sync automatically to reflect changes instantly.

Most importantly, photos and videos stay on each device and are not “held hostage” in the cloud. Mylio shrinks raw photos to less than 5% of their original file size so your phone/tablet/laptop won't be full — all while retaining full editing capabilities if you want to edit/customize any photo or video. (The app protects and preserves the originals when you need them too. Everything is automated without the need for attention).

If you need additional storage outside of your device, you can also link Mylio to the cloud or to a physical hard drive for additional storage.

And because Mylio stores everything on your device, the price of Mylio doesn't go up as users add more files or connect more devices.

Plus, you can store e-books and PDFs in your Mylio account, so you can access your reading material offline whenever you need it. It's perfect for long flights or trips to destinations where Wi-Fi might be unreliable.

How Mylio Works

After you register an account at mylio.com, you can download the application to your device. Here's how the dashboard looks:

You can then start dumping your photos. You just drag and drop. This is very easy:

Here are some photos I've added so far. Notice how Mylio organizes them automatically by date:

While you can organize things by folders and albums, the main calendar view will also organize everything by date, so you can see exactly when your photos were taken.

You can also see exactly where they were taken too:

You can also zoom in to see specific destinations in each country:

This is especially helpful if you can't remember where you were for certain parts of your trip. You can manually tag any old photos that weren't added automatically either.

And if you need to edit a photo before sharing it, you can do it right on Mylio:

And because all your photos are connected, if you edit them on your desktop, they will also be edited on your tablet and smartphone. Everything is connected!

And while Mylio is great for photos, you can add other documents too, like scans of your passport, visa documents, airline or train tickets and more, ensuring all your important travel documents are safe and secure and accessible on all devices.

Mylio also has facial recognition, so once you've tagged people a few times, this feature kicks in and lets you sort and search your photos by person — not just place or date.

I tagged myself once and tagged over a hundred photos with me in them. If you travel a lot with friends or family, this makes sorting (and finding) pictures a lot easier, as you can simply type in “mom” or “daddy”, and all your tagged pictures will appear.

Who is Mylio for?

Clear, Miles best for travelers who take a lot of pictures — including travel professionals. Security and accessibility features make it a choice for people who work across multiple devices. It makes sharing on social easy too.

However, even if you're just a casual traveler, Mylio can help you sort, store, and organize your photos better. Calendar and map view options make finding and sharing them easy.

And since it's cheaper than cloud services like Dropbox, you get a lot of value for even less money!

In short, if you travel a lot and like taking photos, Mylio is an app worth downloading!
