CHICAGO (WLS) — A woman was found shot dead after an apartment fire in an Austin neighborhood Friday morning, Chicago police said.
Authorities responded around 2:16 a.m. to a fire in the 200 South Lavergne Avenue block.

A 57-year-old woman was found in an apartment and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.
A neighbor who lived directly below the woman said they were very good friends.
“I heard a noise and I knocked on the ceiling to let me know if he was okay because that was our signal,” he said. “I heard something knock back like three times and so I called him and I texted him and he didn't respond.”
Neighbors said the victims were a mother and grandmother.
Another neighbor next door rushed out of his building after smelling smoke.
“I woke up to smoke coming from under the floor under the radiator boards and it smelled of plastic and I went all over the house to see what was burning,” said resident Stacey Adams. “When I came out. I looked out the window. I saw smoke next door. The fire was coming from next door on the third floor.”

Police said they were conducting an investigation into the death. No one else was injured in the fire.
