HONG KONG — Coco Lee, a Hong Kong-born singer-songwriter who had a very successful career in Asia, died by suicide, her siblings said Wednesday. He is 48 years old.
The star had been suffering from depression for several years, said Lee's older sisters Carol and Nancy Lee in a statement posted on Facebook and Instagram, with her condition deteriorating drastically over the last few months.
“Although, CoCo sought professional help and did his best to fight depression, unfortunately his inner demons took over him,” the statement read.
Lee attempted suicide at home over the weekend and he was rushed to hospital, his sister said. They said that he was in a coma and died on Wednesday.
Lee, who was born in Hong Kong but later moved to the US where he attended middle and high school, had a very successful career in Asia as a pop singer in the 1990s and 2000s, where he was recognized for his powerful voice and live shows. .
Lee, originally a Mandopop singer, began releasing albums in Cantonese and English during his nearly 30 year career.
She is the voice of the heroine Fa Mulan in the Chinese version of Disney's Mulan, and also sings the Chinese version of the film's theme song “Reflection.”
In 2011, Lee married Bruce Rockowitz, a Canadian businessman who was the former CEO of the Hong Kong supply chain company Li. &Fung. Although he has two stepdaughters from his marriage to Rockowitz, Lee has no children of his own.
“CoCo is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and he is trying hard to shine for the Chinese people,” his sister said in their post.
