OLD BRIDGE, New Jersey — The mystery surrounding the pasta trail that ended up in a New Jersey town has finally been solved.
Officials in Old Bridge, Middlesex County, announced that no charges will be filed against the person responsible dumped more than 500 pounds of pasta in a forest earlier this month.
Community advocates say the unidentified man has a history of mental illness.
Residents of Old Bridge were shocked when piles of macaroni, spaghetti and ziti strewn along the Veterans Park stream.
Police believe the giant pile of uncooked pasta, which stretched more than 25 feet in a wooded area, was removed from its packaging and then dumped along the river.
Officers said they initially did not know about the incident because there were no calls or reports from any residents, except through posts on Facebook.
As soon as the report was made, two Public Works Department employees came to clean up the area.
Authorities said they were able to get rid of all the paste in less than an hour.
