4 teenagers died in the Wheeling accident

DRIVING, Sick (WLS) — Four teenagers were killed and three others injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Wheeling late Tuesday, police said.

The crash involving three vehicles occurred around 10.19pm on Dundee and Schoenbeck roads, police said.

Seven people were taken to hospital and four of them, all teenagers aged 16-18, died, police said. The teenagers were in the same vehicle, police said.

Police said speed and neglected traffic signals appear to have been the culprits in the crash.

A witness said one of the vehicles was full of people. One of the cars hit a lamp post, causing a blackout in the area. Police say all electricity has been restored.

Meanwhile, one of the neighbors heard the accident as it happened.

“Yeah, I'm right down the road, pretty close from here,” said John Vinci. “The explosion was loud and hit a lamp post and the power went out for the whole block.”

The Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit of the Northwest Suburban Major Case Assistance Team along with Wheeling Police Accident investigators are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Wheeling Police Department at 847-459-2632.
