Hundreds of riders on the Brown and Purple Lines were evacuated along the catwalk over the Chicago River when their trains lost power in Wells and Wacker Tuesday night.
No injuries were reported, but the Chicago Fire Department tweeted that “some were nervous about the catwalk over the river but firefighters scattered to reassure them.”
The riders were on a Purple Line Express when the rails lost power near the Merchandise Mart. Service on the line was suspended between Armitage and the Loop and shuttle buses were used, according to CTA.
Service was restored around 10:15 p.m., CTA said.
Fewer than 100 passengers were still on the congested train. CFD continues the evacuation to the Merchandise Mart station. CFD EMS ensures all passengers are ok. Some were nervous about the catwalk over the river but firefighters were called in to reassure them pic.twitter.com/IEs3B9vsKK
