CHICAGO (WLS) — Urban Prep Academy student families speak at a public gathering Monday night as Chicago Public Schools prepares to take over two of the high-profile charter schools.

In April the state council rejected the school's application on Wednesday to retain control of the two remaining campuses in Bronzeville and Englewood.

The state board said Urban Prep was badly run and financially irresponsible in recent years, saying it did not have the best interests of students in mind.

The board pointed to recent investigations involving charter schools, as reports from the Chicago Public Schools inspector general included misconduct allegations against charter school founder Tim King.

CPS will now permanently control the academy, saying it will not close two campuses, in Englewood and Bronzeville, and the district hopes to retain all teachers and staff.

Urban Prep students have the option of enrolling at a new school on the same campus or another school altogether for the 2023-2024 academic year.
