Having lived in Africa for almost a year now, I've had my fair share of safari experiences and lodges. But considering a safari is such a magical experience, whenever I can I will keep coming back for more. Over the years I've stayed in too many beautiful cottages to count, but like anything, I have my favorite! So these are the best safari lodges in Africa, tried and tested by you in earnest.

1. SanCamp, Botswana
I'll start with my favorite campsite in all of Africa – Camp San in Botswana. Even though it's far from your typical safari camp, I personally think that's what makes it so special. While you won't find the big five here in the Kalahari desert, this camp hones in on the smaller creatures found in the desert. But more than that, it's about completely disconnecting from your ordinary life and adjusting to the present. There is no wifi or electricity in the tents, but there are lots of opportunities to get in touch with nature.
2. Sandibe, Botswana
My second favorite cottage in Botswana is named Sandibe. It is the crown jewel of AndBeyond's Botswana portfolio, where they have a number of camps in and around the Okavango Delta. Sandibe is the most expensive camp of the AndBeyond portfolio in Botswana, but also the most magical. If you're looking for a unique honeymoon location, this is your best bet.
3. Sossusvlei Inn, Namibia
Last year I finally had the opportunity to visit Namibia. Being based in South Africa next door has given me even more reasons to get out there and experience more of Africa. When we ventured North to Namibia we checked in Sossusvlei Desert Hut. This cottage was recently renovated from top to bottom and the result is simply amazing. Waking up in the desert is a luxury I will definitely not forget for the rest of my life.

4. Boulders Lodge, South Africa
Stone Hut in South Africa wasn't my first cottage experience in the country but it was definitely my favorite! I will never forget sitting on my deck when I saw a young elephant drinking from my pool and popping up to say hello! Since then I learned that this is a regular occurrence at lodges so if you are looking for up close animal encounters this is a great lodge to stay during your safari.
5. Cottars Safari Camp, Kenya
When I checked in to Cottars Safari Camp in Kenya, I felt like I stepped back in time. The 1920s safari camp is one of the oldest on offer and is beautifully situated on the outskirts of the Maasai Mara. Since the park itself is flooded with safari goers, this is a great alternative to experience more serenity but still be close to the park.
6. Mnemba Island, Zanzibar
OK, I say: Mnemba Island is my favorite lodge in all of Africa. Even though this is not a traditional safari lodge, it still deserves a place on this list. With only twelve rooms located on a private island off the coast of Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is barefoot luxury at its most.
7. Angama Mara, Kenya
Angama Mara generally considered the best safari lodge in Kenya's Maasai Mara. This recently opened lodge has come onto the safari scene with much acclaim, especially to celebrate the unique location it occupies overlooking the Mara. If you're looking for a honeymoon location with views for days on end, this is your best bet in East Africa.
8. Bush Villa, Kenya
Although Bush Villa falls under the Cottar Safari Camp umbrella, I think it deserves a mention on its own. This very large villa is the perfect choice for large families or large groups to enjoy their own private oasis. This villa is located above Cottar Safari Camp, overlooking the Maasai Mara below. Even Angelina Jolie was a guest at Bush Villa!
9. Serengeti House, Tanzania
Serengeti House in Tanzania is the top property in Singita's safari portfolio. This private villa offers four bedrooms, an infinity pool and a private gym. The villa also comes with a private chef, so you can truly relax and enjoy some alone time with your group.
10. Royal Malewane, South Africa
When I checked in to Royal Malewane a few years ago i have visited some of the nearby camps. But Royal Malewane has its own charm, with a unique interior design that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Be sure to visit the day spa where you will find this beautiful lap pool reminiscent of a Moroccan riad.
11. And Outside the Bateleur Camp
During my time in East Africa, I think it's safe to say Bateleur Camp is my favorite safari lodge. This newly renovated cottage is the perfect mix of old meets new, with all the classic touches but all the mod cons that come with it. The service here is incomparable to any other camp I've stayed at in Kenya.
12. Botswana Sky Bed
For an unforgettable night in the jungle, check yourself out Skybed Botswana. The sky bed is located a short drive from nearby Sable Alley, making it the perfect addition for truly immersing yourself in the bush. The sky bed is located in a three story tree house, which means you are as close to the animal activity all night long as you can get! This is not only one of the best safari lodges in Africa but also one of the most adventurous.
13. Singita Soweni, South Africa
Singita Sweni was one of the first safari lodges I've stayed in but that doesn't mean I've forgotten it! My experience at this lodge was memorable, forever ingrained in my mind. Singita really goes above and beyond for their guests, providing gastronomic food and service like no other. They have several cottages in the area, but Singita Sweni is my personal favourite.
14. Sable Alley, Botswana
Sabel Alley is one of the popular safari camp options in Botswana. While Botswana is one of the most expensive countries to visit for a safari adventure, these campgrounds are more affordable. If you're looking for a special escape without the hefty price tag, this camp is moderately priced.

15. Bisate Lodge, Rwanda
Rwanda has become the most sought-after country to visit in Africa. Over the past few years it has skyrocketed in popularity, thanks in large part to the mountain gorilla population that has drawn thousands of tourists to the landlocked country. Bisate Lodge is one of the country's most iconic lodges, with a creative beehive-like design.
16. Thorntree River Lodge, Zambia
Zambia and Zimbabwe are both considered gateways to Victoria Falls, but if you're looking for something special, check out Thorntree River Lodge. This peaceful and serene cottage is the epitome of romance, situated on the quiet banks of the Zambezi river. There's no denying that this is one of the best safari lodges in Africa, as it is certainly our top pick for the most romantic.
17. Pondok Ngorongoro, Tanzania
East Africa is the place you should visit if you are looking for an iconic “Out of Africa” experience. Ngorongoro has to be one of the most beautiful lodges to choose from, situated overlooking the crater itself.
18. Camp Jao, Botswana
I know I know, another Botswana recommendation!? Trust me when I say no safari is quite as magical as the one in the Okavango Delta. Jao Camp is another great option for honeymooners looking for something special. The carefully chosen design makes it one of the most outstanding camps.
19. Singita Kataza, Rwanda
Also in Rwanda, you'll find two Singita properties to choose from when looking for the best safari lodges in Africa. Singita Kataza is a special lodge nestled in the mystical mountains of Rwanda, only a short drive from the famous mountain gorillas.
20. Chinzombo, Zambia
Last but not least, the Chinzombo camp in Zambia is beautifully situated on the banks of the Zambezi river. This campground is a popular choice for honeymooners looking for a quiet location by the water. However, if you're up for some activity, you can opt to canoe down the Zambezi river or take part in a microflight over Victoria Falls. Trust me when I say it's not for the faint of heart!
