The 2024 Democratic National Convention will be held at the United Center, McCormick Place in Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago will host the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center and McCormick Place, the Democratic National Committee announced Tuesday.

Chicago beat out New York City and Atlanta to host the convention, which will take place from August 19 to 22, 2024.

It is expected to attract between 5,000 and 7,000 delegates and alternate and attract up to 50,000 visitors to Chicago. The convention is also expected to provide an economic boost of $120 million or more to the city and beyond.

Evening events will be held at the United Center – the main site of the 1996 Democratic Party convention in Chicago – with business during the day at the McCormick Place Convention Center.

Illinois' solid blue status, and pro-labor and pro-abortion messaging, were considered factors in the DNC decision. So did the election of progressive Brandon Johnson to be the next mayor of Chicago; Johnson was offering Chicago to President Joe Biden when the president called to congratulate him.

“It gave us the stamp of approval that we needed a really important time in Chicago. You have a political shift, a progressive wave coming in. That's another push to Chicago saying yes, this is where the Democratic Party wants to be right now,” said ABC7 Political Analyst Laura Washington.

Republicans will host their 2024 convention in nearby Milwaukee.

Midwestern Democrats have rallied around Chicago's pro-labor history and proximity to perennial battleground states like Michigan and Wisconsin in their case for the nation's third-largest city.

“Chicago is a great choice to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “Democrats will come together to showcase our historic progress including building the economy from the middle out and the bottom up, not the top down. From repairing our roads and bridges, to unleashing a manufacturing boom, and creating more than 12.5 million new jobs with good pay, we've delivered so much to hard-working Americans – it's time to get the job done.”

Chicago last hosted the Democratic National Convention in 1996.

“The 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago will welcome people from across the country to a memorable event that highlights our party's vision to uplift the families of workers and those who are too often left out and abandoned,” Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement. . “Our great global city and diverse community, unrivaled hospitality, and world-renowned places showcase the best of America and its people represent the heart of our country.”

Senator Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, said in a statement, “The Midwest is key to victory in 2024, and no city is better positioned to reach those voters than Chicago. I look forward to welcoming the world to Illinois in 2024 and demonstrating what it's like when we all come together to create a future built on the policies that served for the American family.”
